Tankless Water Heaters (aka Continues or On Demand Water Heaters) unlike conventional water heaters which heat a tank of 20 plus gallons of water depending on the size of the tank, these water heaters heat water as it is needed. Therefore, you are not having to heat water which is not being used.

I have one in the motor home and when I built the cabinet it sits in, I put drying racks above it for food drying.  So I not only get hot water when I call for it, I also am preserving fruits and vegetables for use in the future.

Here's the way these things work.  When you turn on your hot water faucet, the water pressure drops telling the water heater its time to fire itself up and leap into action.  Water is than pumped through the coils in the heater and come out the other side all heated up, delivering hot water to your faucet.  When you turn your faucet off, the pressure builds thus shutting down the water heater until the next time it is required.

The nice thing about these water heaters is that you can have more than one unit in your home, meaning that you don't have to deal with water cooling down in your pipes.  One way of determine if this is happening in your home is by noticing how much hotter the water becomes once it is running for sometime.

You can also use one of these units to supplement your solar water heating or use it with a side arm tank as well.
