Off-Grid Systems can be connected to a local utility or generator for back-up electric.

Solar panels, wind turbines, and micro-hydroelectric turbines all produce DC electric which is used for charging battery banks.  The stored electric is then available when there is no solar gain, wind, or during drier times which may affect your hydro turbine.  This electric can be used to power your DC appliances and lights, it can also be inverted to power your AC equipment.

Solar Off-Grid Electric Systems are most common in remote locations without utility grid service, since off-grid solar-electric systems can work anywhere. These systems operate independently from the grid to provide households and businesses their electricity.  No electric bills and no blackouts caused by grid failures.

There are a number of reasons good reasons folks choose to live off-grid.  These include but are not limited to the prohibitive cost of bringing utility lines to remote home sites, the appeal of an independent lifestyle, the reliability a solar-electric system provides, or to buffer the foreseeable rising cost of utility electric as fossil fuel prices continue to surge. 

When choosing to live off-grid, it often requires making adjustments to when and how you will use electricity, so you can live within the limitations of the system’s output. This doesn’t mean doing without, but rather is a  a more conscientious use of your electricity and way of living. 

Wind Off-Grid Electric is an excellent choice if you have pervailing winds which you can count on. 

However, if your winds are not as coincident that does not eliminate your ability of generating electric using wind energy.  Just keep in mind that your wind would have to be sublimated with either solar or micro-hydroelectric.  Wind compliments solar since in areas where there is not a regular source of wind, most likely there will be wind during storms and cloudy days when there is no sun.
