The
simple
answer
is, an
inverter
is a
device
that
changes
direct
current
(DC)
into
alternating
current
(AC). Of
course,
the
story
behind a
PV array
and its
inverter
is a
little
more
complicated.
DC power, like that produced from a set of solar panels or modules (PV array), is not easily distributed or usable with standard, energy consuming devices found in residences and businesses today. This is where the inverter simplifies the process and makes itself indispensable to a PV system. An inverter is connected to a PV array as well as an electrical source provided by the local utility company (i.e. on-grid or grid-connected). The solar panels or modules generate clean DC power from the sun's energy and transmit it along high voltage wiring until it arrives at the inverter. Then the inverter goes to work by converting the DC energy into utility-grade AC power, like that found in an electrical socket. In addition to making the DC-to-AC conversion, very strict safety and performance standards are required to deliver this high quality power to your home or building. most

function
of a PV
inverter

capture

convert

PV
array's
power
output
as

transform
it into
usable
AC
